Everyone should be given the opportunity to learn computer science

CSEd Botswana Hour of Code 2026

Our Hour of Code 2026 will deliver a family coding session to parents and young people in Gabarone, at the University of Botswana.

On 20th June 2026, CSEdBotswana, an initiative in the Faculty of Maths and Science Education at the University of Botswana will provide an opportunity for parents and young people to engage in an hour of code event. The aim of the activity is to bring familes together and that anyone can learn the basics of AI and machine learning in a fun and easy way.

Relevant and relatable AI tools!

20th June 2026

Our very first family coding session is at the University of Botswana, Gabarone. Participants will create an AI tourism system using both Setswana and English, with examples contextualised around Botswana. This approach helps make AI and coding more meaningful, relatable, and connected to our local culture and experiences. Watch this space for photos of our event!

Hour of Code 2026 event

During this year’s Family Coding event, participants built a Tourist/Traveller Recommender System for Botswana.

Using Machine Learning for Kids, families trained an AI model to classify tourist destinations into four categories, tested it, and connected it to Scratch to build a system that advises tourists using their trained machine learning model. They also learned about the ethics of AI, including fairness, bias, and the responsibility we have when building technology.

What made the project special was that it was rooted in Botswana, with local examples and images showcasing Botswana tourism. This made the learning more meaningful, relatable, and connected to real life.

One of the most exciting moments was hearing participants say they now want to build real systems to solve real problems, including challenges in their workplaces. That is the kind of fire we are happy to ignite.

Facilitator Training for Hour of Code 2026

On 12th June, our expert volunteers supported a team of facilitators to plan and prepare our Hour of Code 2026 event. Through their dedication and commitment, all involved made sure that parents and their children will have the best possible experience as they learn to code and explore AI together.
